BRAUNSTON SCOUTS WIN RAFT RACE FOR RECORD 5TH TIME!
On Sunday 30th June at Daventry Country Park Scouts from the 2nd Braunston Scout pack won the Daventry District Annual Raft Race for a record 5th Time. The competition is open to all the Scout Groups in the Daventry area.
The teams arrive with all the materials they need to make their raft and are given less than 2 hours to build it. There are detailed rules but essentially no adult help is allowed and no fixings or pre-assembled kits are allowed – the Scouts have to lash the rafts together using ropes, bits of wood and typically plastic barrels – this is a test of of both teamwork and scouting rope skills. Once build time is up they then
race against each other across the Reservoir – around a post and back.
After the heats the 3 strongest teams go ‘head to head’ in the final. In the heats the Braunston team won by a wide margin – their combination of a very sturdy raft and well co-ordinated paddling paid off big time. However the final started with a set back as they veered in to overhanging bushes. However Team Captain Charlie Rawbone held his nerve, steered them out and they overtook both teams with what was eventually a clear win.
Stuart Muddiman and Steve Irwin who coached the team said they were “immensely proud of this young team” as many had only just moved up from Cubs.
The 2nd Braunston Explorers (Scout members from 14 1/2 but under 18 years old) also won their race. Both Teams are pictured together with their trophies as well some photos of the day.
