Dear Parent

Hopefully the letter that you have received will be sufficient to answer the questions that you may have about the changes that Braunston Scouts is seeking to make, however if you still have some, why not see if we can answer them through these Frequently Asked Questions?

How much is this going to cost me?

  • Nothing, all costs of DBS & training covered by Scouting

I am happy with the parent rota – why can’t we continue to use this?

  • Cubs already use a parent rota and will continue. Parent rota was only meant for occasional use (max once a month) as parents are not DBS checked the Leader has to supervise at all times so it has significant limits.

I am happy to do the training and support on week-nights but I cannot commit to camping weekends is that a problem?

  • Camps require a minimum of 4 Adults trained & checked to this level regardless of how few Young people go. BUT each section has only 1 leader or less so without a pool of parents to share support we can not camp. So to be fair to all we will make it a condition for parents wanting a place for their YP on a camp/residential so cover can be shared amongst many. If your circumstances prevent you from doing this then please let us know and we can agree other ways you can help

Do I need to wear a uniform?

  • No but you can if you would like to

Will a DBS check affect my credit rating?

  • No DBS Checks are about Criminal records not credit rating

What happens if I cannot complete the training on time?

  • Please talk to us about any difficulties and we will help (see also next question).

I don’t have access to a computer, can I complete the training another way?

  • Yes we will offer face to face training at the Den for any unable to access it online or if you would like to do online you can use our device at the Den using our WiFi.

If I don’t agree to do this, does it mean that my child will be asked to leave Braunston Scouts. (for current members)

  • This is the only way we can offer experiences like camping/residentials/adventurous activity days/others so to be fair to all we are making it a condition for parents wanting a place for their YP on such events so cover can be shared amongst many. It takes time to process and complete and if none of YP’s parents’ guardians complete this it excludes them from them. If your circumstances prevent you from doing this then please let us know to see if we can agree other ways you can help.

Does this apply to all of the parents / guardians in my family or is it one per household?

  • We would love all parents to do this but one per household is enough.

If I want my child to join Braunston Beavers, Cubs or Scouts is this a mandatory requirement? (new members)

  • As answer to question 8

Do I have to take a test on the training and what if I do not pass?

  • Each module has a short quiz at the end. But you can keep taking it until you pass. We only see that you have passed. Face to face classes do not require a test

Does this make me responsible for the Young People?

  • NO The Uniformed Leader in Charge (LiC) retains overall responsibility.

Will you then ask us to do more training?

  • We would really like a few parents to complete First Response training (basic first aid) this takes about 4 hours and includes hands on practical sessions with infant, child & adult Resuscitation dummies of CPR. On Camps ideally a Min of 2 adults will be trained in First Response

What’s is in this for our Young People?

  • Firstly it makes us much more able to do fun stuff like Camps/sleepovers knowing we have a large pool of Adults we can draw on that are authorised to support such events

What is in this for parents?

  • Well obviously happier young people but also It makes you a member of scouting and gives you access to a vast array of training which could be useful to you but we will also fund you to do fun stuff for permits to instruct Young people e.g. Group Funded David’s Archery training, Paddle Sport Instructor training, exam & registration and will fund his future air-rifle training

What Roles still need Adult Volunteers?

Ideally each section should have 2 Leaders & 2 Assistants  Min is 1 of each Today its:

Beavers             1 Leader (Michaela)

Cubs                 1 Leader (David)

Scout                 0 Leader 1 assistant (David covering)

We also need  a  Secretary  (David covering)  Den Maintenance     Team (David covering)

A Group Scout Leader
